I’m writing to you today to ask for your help about something that I am very passionate about: Workplace Bullying. What is workplace bullying? Here is some helpful information.
We have an opportunity to make a difference by supporting a bill currently sponsored in the Senate that, if passed, would give employees and employers a substantive legal way to address and reduce the impact that workplace bullying has on people in Washington State.
Workplace Bullying is unacceptable. No one should have to endure daily verbal, emotional, psychological abuse or sabotage while trying to provide for their family and build their career, but it is happening every day, in every industry.
All too often employees are yelled at, sworn at, targeted for ridicule, called names and other aggressive behaviors. The abuses may be directed at one person or an entire team. It may be a co-worker or a supervisor. Many times, the abuse has nothing to do with the victim’s race, gender or other protected classes, but is simply the result of an aggressive and abusive person within the workplace.
Sexual harassment is also a form of bullying. Nationwide, more women than men are being targeted for abuse that is not just sexually motivated, so we need broader protections to ensure safety for all women!
Not only is bullying a horrible thing to endure as an employee, but it also affects an employer’s bottom line through high turnover and a negative impact to their reputation. Ignoring bullying makes it difficult for employers to attract new employees and significantly impacts the bottom line. The expenses that surround the effects of bullying cost businesses millions of dollars every year.
Unfortunately, there is no law protecting employees from non-discriminatory abuse in the workplace in Washington State or anywhere in the nation, but the opportunity to create one is right now in Olympia. You can find the actual SB 5423 bill here.

- Call each member of the committee at the link above and voice your support for SB 5423 asking them to pass the bill out of committee with the amendments suggested. AND,
